George Town, Grand Cayman
Grand Cayman is a favorite stop on any Caribbean cruise and makes for a wonderful land vacation, too. Your ship cannot dock directly in George Town because of the coral formations, so you will need to take a "tender" (transfer vessel) from the ship into town.
Once in George Town, you will find a beautiful, spotless town full of upscale retail stores. Don't forget the rum cakes! From cameras, to jewlery, to perfume, and alcohol, George Town has it all. There is also a Margaritaville, for the best hamburgers and conch chowder ever, if you can get into the place.
People on Grand Cayman are under the British influence. You will notice it everywhere. And they are the most hospitable and polite people in the entire region. I have actually witnessed a taxi driver walk a hot beach for thirty minutes to return a wallet to a customer that left his things in in the cab. That experience exemplifies the civility of Grand Cayman citizens.
Beaches are exquisite here. (The picture above is of our favorite beach on Grand Cayman.) They are truly the things of postcard pictures. Many little out-of-the-way beaches let you get away from the tourist crowd if you wish. Scuba is huge here. The coral that prevents the ships from docking also makes for fabulous scuba diving and snorkeling. One of the biggest attractions on the water is Stingray City. In very shallow waters, you can feed and interact with these gentle creatures.
There are many other attractions is you want to stay dry. The Cayman Turtle Farm and Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park can form the basis of a land tour. Here it is easy to just grab a cab in port and take a land tour. You'll be in good hands. Or schedule your excursion ahead of time by using one of the shore excursion operators under the Shore Excursion tab, above, or book with the cruise line.
Grand Cayman is beautiful island, and you will be comfortable here.
